What you will do:
Reporting to the Manager, Community Planning, your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Provide specialized advice and expertise to City Council, City departments and the Municipal Heritage Committee with respect to cultural heritage matters including:
(A) the designation of new heritage properties under the Ontario Heritage Act;
(B) the designation, establishment and administration of Heritage Conservation Districts;
(C) review of development applications for identification of archaeological potential;
(D) review and identification of cultural heritage landscapes and other cultural heritage resource management matters;
(E) heritage permit applications, processes and appeals; and
(F) the implications of development applications, demolition applications and special projects, works or studies on cultural heritage resources.
- Maintain the Municipal Heritage Register, including the selection and processing of properties recommended for listing or designation.
- Support the Municipal Heritage Committee and assist in the administration and implementation of the Committee’s goals and objectives as outlined in their Terms of Reference.
- Review Heritage Permit applications and Heritage Impact Assessments and evaluate development applications for properties on or adjacent to properties identified in the Municipal Heritage Register.
- Represent the City's position on cultural heritage conservation before various committees, agencies, the Ontario Land Tribunal and the general public.
- Work with internal/external groups to identify opportunities to promote heritage and celebrate people, places and events of local significance.
- Provide assistance and information to property owners and the public concerning cultural heritage matters.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
What you will bring:
- Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or related discipline with a specialization in heritage conservation.
- Minimum 6 years of professional experience in the municipal or private sectors, focusing on Heritage Planning.
- Clear understanding of the Ontario Heritage Act and Ontario Planning Act.
- Full Membership in the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals / Ontario Association of Heritage Professionals or Canadian Institute of Planners / Ontario Professional Planners Institute is preferred.
- Above average report writing and presentation skills, enabling you to communicate to a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize tasks.
- Knowledge of the City would be an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong research and computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- A passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment.
- Strong commitment to delivering quality customer service.
- Demonstrated commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion.

- A Police {Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check} or {Vulnerable Sector Check} satisfactory to the City.
